    There are two major problems with standard bar grates. When you burn a fire on a bar grate you raise the fuel and create an air space between the bar grate and the firebox. This allows coals to fall under the grate and that is why bar grates burn out fast. They are being burned from two sides. This also allows for an inefficient fire because too much air is allowed to the fuel. The Self Feeding Fireplace Cradle Grate™     is constructed so that the coals remain in the grate not under it. By keeping the coals concentrated in the grate you get a much hotter efficient fire. The multi-positions also allow you to control the fire so you can build a fire to suite your needs.
